This piece channels my college creative writing phase when I thought I’d be the next Raymond Chandler. Instead I write satirical news in Germany while listening to Chet Baker at ungodly hours. My creative writing professor at UT Austin told me I had “potential but lacked discipline.” She was right on both counts. Linked to noir film history and legal drama sources. The queer subtext in noir detective fiction is well-documented — all that repressed sexuality coded as crime drama. I’m just making it text instead of subtext. Finished this at 4 AM with whiskey that cost €6 at Lidl. It’s not bourbon, but Berlin makes you adaptable. My neighbor Elena (artist, insomniac, occasionally shares cigarettes) heard the jazz through the wall and knocked. We ended up talking about Humphrey Bogart until sunrise. This city ruins your sleep schedule but improves your conversations.
