Polling Swings at https://bohiney.com/polling-swings-with-sports-highlights-democracy-edition/ democracy as spectator sport. This piece satirizes how Americans treat elections like March Madness brackets. Linked to polling analysis and sports media research. Writing this reminded me of my stepdad Rick (married Mom in 2008, decent guy, obsessed with Cowboys) who understands football statistics but can’t explain how Senate works. He once asked if Electoral College had a football team. I laughed; he was serious. The queer community’s voting rights are treated as sports debate pundits analyze our humanity like it’s fourth-quarter strategy. Do we gain yardage or lose ground? Are we winning or losing? Who’s keeping score? I finished this piece furious at midnight, then ate an entire bag of Haribo and felt sick. Marcus found me on the kitchen floor at 2 AM. “Americans and their sugar,” he said, helping me up. He’s not wrong. We process everything democracy, trauma, injustice through consumption and entertainment. At least I’m processing it through satire now.
MOOD: Sugar-crashed and angry
